‘I just can’t face the upheaval of having a stairlift installed’

12:00am | & Tips and Advice

Nobody likes upheaval in their home, with building work creating mess and damage that will need making good afterwards through replastering and redecorating.

It’s an unwanted inconvenience at any time of life, but even more so in your later years when you’ve got your home just how you like it. So if you’ve come to the point where you need a stairlift to retain your independence and continue enjoying full use of all your home, how do you cope with the mess and upheaval that the installation will cause?

The answer is that with an Acorn Stairlift, you don’t… because there is no mess and upheaval!

Some customers have told us they put off having a stairlift installed because they couldn’t face the disruption and the prospect of expensive rewiring or redecorating. They were pleasantly surprised to learn that with an Acorn Stairlift there is no mess, no fuss and no need for structural work which will need making good afterwards.

All Acorn Stairlifts are fixed to the stairs, not the wall, so there is no need to go drilling through plaster or reinforcing walls to take the weight. Specially designed supports hold the light but strong aluminium stairlift rail at exactly the right height above the staircase and the correct distance from the wall. They are only fixed in place once our experienced Acorn installation engineer is satisfied they are in precisely the right place, so there is no ‘trial and error’ approach.

There’s an old phrase familiar to many time-served craftsmen – “measure twice, cut once”. For our installation engineers it is “measure twice, drill once”. There is no need to remove stairs carpets and the rail supports can be fixed to stone stairs as well as the wooden staircases found in the vast majority of homes.

There is no need for rewiring either. Our award-winning Acorn Stairlifts simply plug into the nearest convenient wall socket, running off the domestic 240v electricity supply. The powerful batteries in the stairlift carriage are recharged whenever it is in the ‘docking’ position at the top or bottom of the stairs. It only draws electricity from the household supply while it is charging, making an Acorn Stairlift very cheap to run.

Using these high-power and reliable rechargeable battery packs also means you’ll never be left ‘stranded’ on your stairlift part-way up or down the stairs if there is a power cut or a fuse trips. Your stairlift will continue to work until the battery charge is depleted, which should be several days.

Because there is no structural work or damage to walls, there is no need for redecorating once your Acorn Stairlift is installed. You won’t even need to get out the vacuum cleaner, as all our installers make a thorough job of cleaning up after themselves.

In some cases, where the staircase is particularly narrow, it may be necessary to remove an existing bannister rail to maximise the space available for other people to use the stairs. If this is necessary, it will be done by our engineer who will make sure everything is left tidy. However, Acorn Stairlift carriages are the most slimline on the market, with seats, footrests and armrests that all fold up neatly out of the way when not in use, so chances are it won’t need doing.

Many of our customers are surprised and delighted at just how quickly and efficiently their stairlift has been installed, even on more complex curved staircases. Acorn’s revolutionary FastTrack® system of interlocking stairlift rail sections means any adjustments can be made on site by our skilled installers, without the rail needing to be sent back to the factory for modification. Our installers’ vans are like mobile workshops and warehouses all in one, containing everything they need to make sure you have the perfect bespoke stairlift precisely matched to the contours of your staircase.

The installer’s job is only finished once the customer is entirely happy with their new Acorn Stairlift and fully comfortable with how to operate its simple and intuitive controls. Even after the installer is gone, help is only ever a phone call away thanks to our free 24-hour helpline.

Acorn has more than 75 fully-trained installation engineers working throughout the UK, so once you’ve decided to go ahead, your stairlift can be installed and running within just a few days, even next day if urgency is paramount. The installation itself takes just a few hours for a curved staircase and even less for a straight one. You’ll be amazed at how quickly an Acorn Stairlift can begin to give your life a lift.

Finally, Acorn Stairlifts can also be easily removed if and when they are no longer needed, with barely a sign that they were ever there. If your stairs are uncovered, you will have a few drill holes to fill – a quick and simple job – but if the stairs are carpeted you won’t even need to do that.
